Congratulations to all the culinary programs at CPS who participated in the recent “Cooking Up Change” event through the Healthy Schools Campaign. We were honored to be a sponsor again this year, and these young, aspiring chefs always put their heart and soul into their offerings. Every year, teams are that much more creative; a reflection of the dedicated instructors and support staff. Special congratulations to this year’s winners: Vaughn Occupational HS, with their winning lunch offering, “Cajun Po-Boy Sandwich”, and to Prosser Career Academy with their Breakfast Blueprint winner, “Spicy Egg Burrito and Fresh Banana”! It was another well-attended event supporting Chicago’s aspiring culinary students!

”A much deserved recognition to Prosser Career Academy for their Healthy Schools Campaign’s “Cooking Up Change” competition winning menu, which was served district-wide to the CPS student population to enjoy last Tuesday. We were fortunate to be one of the sponsors invited to celebrate this event, seeing these creative students recognized for their hard work. Their winning entry of Arroz con Pollo Tazon, Roasted Corn & Carrot Relish, and Pear Crisp, was not only very enjoyable, but also a testament to CPS’ Culinary Program district-wide, having to use only those ingredients regularly used in their kitchens. Congrats to CPS Chief of Nutrition Support Services, Leslie Fowler, Director, Crystal Cooper, CPS Culinary Program Director, Chef David Blackmon, Instructor Chef Kulasik, Aramark, Healthy Schools Campaign, and of course the creative culinary team at Prosser!
Good Luck to Team Prosser at the National Finals in D.C. this coming June!

”What a wonderful event this past evening at the Healthy Schools/Chicago Public Schools “Cooking Up Change” finals held at the Bridgeport Arts Center. Nine CPS culinary school programs competed for a chance to advance to the Nationals in DC next June. Culinary teams must create a main dish and a side dish, using only those ingredients available in the school cafeterias. We have been proud sponsors of the event for 5+ years now, and each year it gets more exciting and creative, watching the energy and pride these teams put forth in their offerings. As far as I am concerned, they are all champions and we wish them well in their future culinary endeavors! Special thanks go out CPS leadership, Leslie Fowler and David Blackmon, along with HSC’s Rochelle Davis and their respective teams. This event always seems to outdo itself from the prior year. Congratulations to Prosser Career Academy, taking home first place and a ticket to DC, with their delicious Arroz con Pollo, and Zanahorias Rostizadas Relish and Pear Crisp! Runners up were CVCA and Marshall Metropolitan HS. Forgive me on the pic quality, but I’m sure you get the gist…Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

”We hosted a tour and Q & A session for a group of environmental studies students and faculty from Marist High School (my alma mater!). It was such an enjoyable experience for me as an alum, seeing the vibrancy of the students, and how the school continues to grow in academics and spirit. A big thank you to my fellow alum, Marty Wirtz, for putting this field trip together!
